Dear Diary 2014 - Week 3

Week 3,  13.1.14 TO 19.1.14

Samples of dress silks from a merchant's order book, Lyon, France, 1763

From the above image of the samples of dress silks I have picked up the colours Maroon/Pink - Green -Blue-Beige.
Maroon {red}  and  Green are complimentary colours, and work well together. I chose the colour beige to provide a calm, relaxing environment for the green and maroon. Then a touch blue was worked in the trial of silk ribbon french knots, to ensure a touch of sophistication
Beige is a chameleon, taking on some of the attributes of stronger warm or cool colors it accompanies.  Beige is a neutral color with a bit of the warmth of brown and the crisp, coolness of white.
Green is life and renewal. Abundant in nature, green signifies growth, renewal, health, and environment. Green is a restful color, which is thought to promote life and renewal
and has a warming and cooling effect. The color green denotes balance, harmony, and stability.
Maroon / Pink
Pink / maroon is a softer, less violent red. Pink is the sweet side of red. Both red and pink denote love but while red is hot passion, pink is romantic and charming.
Blue is a calming colour. It is thought to bring peace, and is believed to keep the bad spirits away.  Blue conveys importance and confidence.
The materials I engaged to create the hexagon sample is:
  • Assorted cotton fabric
  • Half inch paper hexagons
  • silk ribbon
  • stranded cotton
  • sewing cotton
  • Card

  1. I think I like this one best - the richness of colour, and the embroidery down the centre combine to make this truly elegant. I love how well you have interpreted these - do the ideas come easy? It looks as if they do...

    1. Jillayne, Thank you for stopping by and having a look at my blog.
This particular week sampler did turn out really well.
